Kelly Rae Garland began her journey into birth work after the birth of her son, River Dakota. Her goal is to empower, to protect, nurture and educate every birthing person she has the honor of working with. She has a deep understanding of the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a laboring person. In her free time, Kelly loves yoga, playing piano and guitar and petting all of her many cats.

After her own birth experience, Kelly Rae trained as a doula, with Debra Pascali-Bonaro through DONA in New York City. She quickly realized that she wanted to become a midwife but wasn’t sure exactly which path was right for her. She began nursing school and after a year realized that wasn’t her path. She found a holistic midwifery school (Birth Institute) that aligned with her ideals and the model of care that she wanted to provide. Kelly has worked with a number of homebirth midwives in the Twin Cities. In addition to her apprenticeships, Kelly Rae is a breastfeeding educator (CLEC), placenta specialist, reiki master and has attended Spinning Babies workshops. Kelly Rae has also worked for Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND as both a CNA and a phlebotomist.
